Which Final Destination movie is the best?

While the majority of Geek Ireland authors are notorious scary cats, it's Halloween season and this author has decided to brave an iconic spooky series: Final Destination.

With five films under their belt and a death count that, as of this writing, is in the hundreds if not thousands, we have to admit that they are a good horror movie marathon.

After it was announced that a sixth installment was in the works, we decided to find out which Final Destination movie is the best of them all and which one is the best to fall asleep to. Allow Geek Ireland to share our ranking with you, starting with…

5. The final destination

You know you're off to a bad start when you're not the final installment in the franchise and called “The Final Destination.”

While we're sure it wasn't necessarily originally planned that way, it is what it is and it's not the only questionable part of the film.

You can tell that the budget was cut for this outing and as a result the deaths and action sequences don't have the same impact as the other entries.

And the way our psychic sees how everyone is going to die after the first near-death experience is also a little silly, so all in all, not a great outing.

4. Final Goal 2

It's never going to be easy being next in line after a huge success and the AJ Cook-led outing appears to have collapsed under the pressure.

The beginning is great, but with so many lives at stake, it ends with a case of death after death after death with no break in between. It's all a bit much.

Combine that with Cook's strange premonitions that someone might be drowning and the solution to it, and everything falls a little unsteady.

3. Final destination 5

The latest film in the series deserves a permanent spot in the middle of our list in our opinion, as it wasn't as good as our two best, but definitely not as bad as some of the others.

Yes, the graphics when the bridge collapsed were a little questionable, but the deaths were kept to the bare essentials to a certain extent, with more “realistic” accidents rather than an insane series of events leading up to it.

What really saves the film is the huge reveal at the end, which was so crazy for first-time viewers that the twist would almost make you change your mind even if you hadn't enjoyed the film up to that point.

2. Final destination 3

Final Destination 3 took us out of New York but brought back the first film's director, James Wong, famous for his work on The X-Files.

They also tried a few different things, like using photos from the night to predict how each of the survivors would die, which was an interesting way to convey foreshadowing.

While we don't want to give away how it ends, this was the first time we saw *insert static here* and this became part of the theme for the later outings.

1. Final destination

Let's face it, the first one is the best. As with many horror franchises (or films in general, really), it's rare that a sequel can surpass the first film, and that's exactly the case with Final Destination.

It also set the template for how the other films were supposed to proceed, namely the way they were supposed to die, the “you're crazy” line, the reveal that they were right, and figuring out who would be next would come as death comes to collect his souls.

It set new standards, and while the rest of the series is quite entertaining, they never really lived up to the original.
