Blackman High School student killed, three others injured in crash involving possible speeding teen driver

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) – Murfreesboro Police continue to investigate a crash that killed a 14-year-old high school student Tuesday morning.

Police believe excessive speed may have played a role in the crash at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Kingdom Drive that left the teenager dead and three others injured.

The accident occurred around 11 a.m. According to police, the 14-year-old passenger in an Audi A4 sedan died at the scene of the accident.

The 16-year-old driver and another 14-year-old passenger in the back seat were taken to Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital and later to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville for treatment.

The 47-year-old driver of an Acura MDX commercial vehicle was also taken to a local hospital for treatment. All three are believed to have non-life-threatening injuries.

MPD said the teens, all black high school students, were returning to school after competing in a state volleyball tournament at Rockvale High School.

“The FACT team commander, Lt. Zachary Ferrell said “preliminary findings indicate that a 47-year-old driver attempted to make a left turn onto Veterans Parkway and entered the path of the car the 16-year-old was driving,” police said. “The vehicles collided and spun several times before stopping. The car and SUV sustained significant damage.”

MPD continues to investigate the cause of the crash, including vehicle speed and other factors.

“We urge all drivers, youth and adults, to understand that every decision made while driving can have life-changing consequences,” Ferrell said. “Responsible driving behavior can prevent future tragedies on our roads.”
