Mid-City mural honors Dodgers legend Fernando Valenzuela with Vin Scully and Tommy Lasorda

MID CITY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — There's a new mural in Mid-City honoring Dodger great Fernando Valenzuela, the legendary pitcher who passed away last week.

The mural is located on Venice Boulevard near Carmona Avenue.

Los Angeles-based artist Gustavo Zermeño Jr. added Valenzuela's portrait to a mural that already featured Vin Scully and Tommy Lasorda. Valenzuela is now squarely in the spotlight.

Meanwhile, a mural honoring his legacy is already set to be erected in Boyle Heights, which will now also serve as a memorial to the Dodger icon's death.

The mural on the side of a Boyle Heights home is expected to be finished Nov. 1, what would have been Fernando Valenzuela's 64th birthday.

The painting, on the side of a tall apartment building, is expected to be finished by Friday, Nov. 1, which would have been Valenzuela's 64th birthday. It is also Dia de los Muertos and possibly the sixth game of the Dodgers-Yankees World Series.

It will be a “space of mourning, healing and celebration,” said artist Robert Vargas, who has painted other large-scale murals around the city, including one by Shohei Ohtani in Little Tokyo.
