Massachusetts man charged with murder in connection with Elmira bar shooting

ELMIRA (WBNG) – A Massachusetts man was arrested on a Superior Court warrant for murder in connection with a shooting at an Elmira bar, authorities announced Wednesday.

The Elmira Police Department said 28-year-old Dante M. Baldwin was arrested for the shooting death of 43-year-old Norman Cherry. In addition to the murder charge, Baldwin faces two felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Police said they learned that Baldwin was found in Springfield, Massachusetts, and then taken into custody on Oct. 8. Baldwin was then returned to New York State.

On May 20 around 11 p.m., officers responded to a shooting at Gush's Thirsty Bar on East Washington Avenue.

Officers initially found no victims, but later learned that Cherry was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle and later died.

The Chemung County Sheriff's Office, West Elmira Police Department, Elmira Fire Department and Erway Ambulance assisted Elmira officers in the investigation of the shooting.

The Springfield, Mass. Police Department and the United States Marshall's Service assisted in the search for Baldwin.

Baldwin was remanded to the Chemung County Jail pending his arraignment in court.
