Judith Light comments on Alyssa Milano's “Who's the Boss” reboot

Just over 40 years ago, on September 20, 1984, Who is the boss? debuted on television and introduced audiences to the lovable characters Tony Danza, Alyssa Milano and Judith Light, who lasted for eight seasons. While the series was certainly silly in a specifically '80s way, it was surprisingly progressive in the way it dealt with class and gender issues, something of a post-70s series Mary Tyler Moore show. This is partly why Alyssa Milano has been trying to evolve and find a home to start over Who is the boss? for several years. She told Entertainment Tonight:

Who is the boss? Was the first thing that actually led to a gender role reversal, right? Tony took care of all the housework, and Judith was divorced, owned her own business, was a single mother, and all the things we didn't really see back then… And a daughter who was a real tomboy.

Judith Light is currently starring alongside Billy Crystal in the spooky thriller Beforewhich premieres on Apple TV+ on October 25, and MovieWeb asked her if she had an answer to Milano's thoughts and if she would be interested in taking part in a possible reboot. “You know what? I don't know how to answer this question because I don't know where they are in their own journey and in their process of putting it together. So when it's more advanced, we could talk about it again. But I definitely enjoyed my time and I love my Tony Danza. She continued:

“And I know exactly what Alyssa is talking about when she says the show was cutting edge. And to this day, young women come up to me and say, 'I saw this show when I was a little girl, and.' “I knew that I could be in business today because I saw a role model.” And back then we didn’t really know what we had, the gender reversal of roles, and the role model of a woman in the workplace, no one had really talked about that before , but, you know, kudos to ABC for doing that. It was a great time.”

Alyssa Milano has a plan for the Who's the Boss reboot.

Milano had told Entertainment Tonight in 2022 that a script had been completed and had been sent to Prime Video's free streaming platform, Freevee. Unfortunately, two years have passed since then and it doesn't look like anything has worked out. However, Milano is still discussing it in 2024. She said:

“I think it could be really funny because in my head Tony will be exactly the same character, but everything around him is changing and growing. So I'm excited about the prospect. I think it could be really, really fun.” … We’re working really hard because we feel like we have more story to tell.”

“Tony would come to watch my kids because I have a job where I travel a lot, so that's a whole dynamic,” Milano teased in 2022. “But also the generational difference between raising a child now and then Generation Then this is always the conflict I have in real life with my parents when it comes to gentle parenting. So I'm really excited about that aspect.
