Woman charged with multiple crimes in fatal Enumclaw crash

Prosecutors have charged a woman accused of causing a fatal crash on State Route 410 with multiple felonies, even though she has already been released from prison.

On October 13, two people were killed and two others were seriously injured in a crash on SR 410 east of Enumclaw. Two of the victims were flown to Harborview Medical Center.

Michelle Renee Oster, 63, is accused of causing the crash. Prosecutors allege she switched between the east and west lanes of SR 410 because she was in a “hurry” to get home.

According to court documents, Oster, while still in the oncoming lane, veered back into the westbound lane and struck the back corner of a Subaru Outback. The Subaru spun into the oncoming lane, where it was then struck by a Honda Fit.

The driver and passenger of the Subaru, a 72-year-old man and his 69-year-old wife, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their dogs were also injured and taken to a local veterinarian.

According to prosecutors, the 32-year-old driver of the Honda broke her arm in the accident and her 38-year-old passenger suffered spinal fractures. Both also had serious internal injuries.

Oster remained uninjured. Police said she admitted to driving and being in a hurry, but appeared more concerned with getting her vape pen from her vehicle than with the victims' condition.

According to court documents, Oster said, “She passed cars, about two or three at a time, then accelerated to 55, looked for a place to stop and turned her signal to similar.” [she’s] “It should be,” and when the traffic cleared, she overtook more cars.”

She also allegedly denied speeding, saying the other drivers should have stopped at 40 to 45 miles per hour if they wanted to look at the trees and such.

Oster also has a criminal and traffic-related history, including reckless driving, drunk driving, speeding in excess of 17 mph, careless driving and theft. She also allegedly told a police officer that she was trying to get off Dilaudid, an opioid more powerful than morphine.

Oster is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault. Her bail was set at $100,000, although prosecutors requested it be set at $500,000. She broke up the next day.

Oster is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 30 and enter a plea.
