Bluegrass Crime Stoppers are searching for information after a pipe bomb was found in the park

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The Lexington Police Department is still seeking information on a case that WKYT first reported last month.

Someone found a so-called pipe bomb in Woodland Park.

“The device did appear to have components that could serve as an explosive device,” said Detective Kristyn Klingshirn of Bluegrass Crime Stoppers.

On the morning of September 22nd, police were called to Lexington Fire Station 5 on Woodland Avenue around 10:30 a.m. They said someone found a pipe bomb in a nearby park and brought it there.

“In some sort of excitement about everything that happened, he left and so did they [police] “I never had the opportunity to talk to him,” Klingshirn said. “As far as I know, no other witnesses have been located who may have seen who planted the device or anything similar.”

Detective Klingshirn says it's unclear where in the park it was found and how long it had been there. She didn't see what it looked like, but she suspects it had wires attached to it, which made it look suspicious.

“A normal person, or even just another officer, usually doesn't know what to do other than clear the area and make sure everyone is at a safe distance in case the device is somehow activated.”

Klingshirn says the Hazard Disposal Unit was called to dismantle the bomb.

She reminds people not to touch something that looks like this, but to get away from it and call 911.

“We are grateful for what this person did. It could have saved someone from getting hurt,” Klingshirn said.

While this device resembled a pipe bomb, Klingshirn said suspicious devices don't always look so obvious.

She says to look out for unattended packages or bags, smells or noises from items, and unexplained timers or devices with unusual functions.

“There are people who have a feel for this kind of thing and with a little guidance they can probably figure out how to make some very sophisticated things.”
