Nine students, one adult injured

CRAWFORD – Police officials have released more details about the school bus crash that left nine students and one adult with minor injuries in the town of Crawford on Monday.

Shortly before 9 a.m., Crawford City Police said Daniel Mellon, 37, of Pine Bush, was driving his 2021 Dodge truck east on State Route 52 when it collided with a 2024 First Student Bus driven by Shawin M. Nedd-Welcome, 54, of Montgomery, who was turning left onto Route 52 from Orange County Route 17.

The bus was transporting 43 Pine Bush students to Edward J. Russell Elementary School at the time.

Nine students, ages 5 to 10, were transported by ambulance to Garnet Health Medical Center in Wallkill. Crawford Police Chief Dominic Blasko said Nedd-Welcome was also transported to Garnet Health Medical Center. All suffered minor injuries, including pain and bruising, police said.

The students were all treated and released, but Nedd-Welcome remained in the hospital for further evaluation.

Crawford City Police were responded to the scene by Montgomery City Police, State Police, Orange County Sheriff's Office, Orange County Emergency Management, Pine Bush and Walden Fire Departments, Pine Bush, Montgomery and Empress EMS and Pine Bush officers supports Central School District.

No charges have been filed, but Crawford police said their investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call 845-744-3300.
