“Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver and actor Will Ferrell have teamed up for a parody video about what they believe is a better portrayal of America than Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless The USA.”

As he closed his show Sunday night, Oliver mocked the use of Greenwood's song at naturalization ceremonies, calling him “a cheesy Bible salesman with views that are completely at odds with everything a naturalization ceremony represents.”

“I'm not sure why it's even played in ceremonies, not just contractually or even musically, but because Greenwood's previous comments about immigrants were inappropriate to say the least,” Oliver said.

He continued: “All of this means that I advocate that Lee Greenwood's song should never again be played at naturalization ceremonies for several reasons, because they deserve a truly unique song for this country. A song that celebrates the nation that is the new Americans about to join and the process they went through without hiding some hard truths about it.”

The show then aired a video that took place at a local bar and featured Ferrell starting a new song.

“You studied hard/You did your best/You filled out the forms and passed the test/Now you're part of a country so blessed by God/And as of today you're an American,” Ferrell began.

He continued, “There's corn dogs and apple pie/Fireworks light up the sky/Nascar, rodeo, barbecue/That stuff is American/Now you are too.”

He later described the country's “shortcomings” as “a really big country with really big problems.”

“Televangelists and fossil fuels/Metal detectors in all our schools/Private prisons and Mountain Dew/That stuff is American/That's your problem too,” Ferrell sang, adding, “Ted f—ing Cruz.”

Another verse included, “These days it's harder to be free/Hard to be the country we were meant to be/You weren't born here, you volunteered/To share your fate with the great and just plain weird.” connect.”

Before the song ended, a figure dressed as “QAnon Shaman” Jacob Chansley, wearing a horned costume and carrying an American flag, ran after Ferrell.

“Holy shit – I just remembered the coup. That’s American,” Ferrell added.

Greenwood's song gained more attention earlier this year after he performed it at the Republican National Convention in July.
