Israeli strikes in northern Gaza and Lebanon reportedly kill more than 150 | News on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

The attacks come as the humanitarian situation in both places worsens and ceasefire talks resume with no expected breakthrough.

More than 150 people have reportedly been killed in Israel's latest attacks in the northern Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

At least 93 Palestinians were killed when an Israeli attack on Tuesday leveled a five-story residential building housing displaced people in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, the head of the Gaza Strip government's media office said. At least 60 people were killed overnight in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon.

Israel carried out the attacks as the humanitarian situation deteriorated in both Gaza and Lebanon. Conditions are particularly harsh in the northern Gaza Strip, which has been under siege by Israel since the beginning of October.

Despite the high death toll and the deteriorating situation of those still living in the northern Gaza Strip, ceasefire talks that have resumed in Qatar are not expected to achieve a breakthrough, while Israel has sought to halt aid agency operations United Nations for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which is the main lifeline for most of the 2.3 million people in the Gaza Strip.

Al Jazeera's Hani Mahmoud reported from Deir el-Balah in Gaza and described harrowing scenes of the attack in Beit Lahiya.

“The images we are seeing show more bodies being pulled out from under the rubble, including women and children,” he said.

It was reported that those pulled from the rubble were bleeding “profusely” and many were “crushed by the heavy weight of the large pieces of concrete that fell on their heads as they slept.”

Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, the main medical facility in northern Gaza, said more than 150 dead and wounded arrived after the attack. However, he warned that many of the injured could die due to a lack of resources.

Last week, Israeli forces detained dozens of medical staff at the hospital, leaving only three doctors behind.

“We call on the world to send specialized medical delegations,” the doctor told Al Jazeera.

“The Most Violent Day”

In eastern Lebanon, at least 60 people were killed and 58 injured in overnight attacks in the Bekaa Valley, the Health Ministry reported.

According to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA), the highest death toll was in the town of Sahl Allak in Baalbek province, where 16 people were killed.

In Ramm, also in Baalbek, nine people were killed in an Israeli airstrike, including a mother and her four children, the state news agency reported.

Baalbek Mayor Bachir Khodr called the attacks “the most violent day in Baalbek since the aggression began.” In a post on X, he said people remained trapped under the rubble.

Israeli bombings of the area, as well as southern Lebanon and Beirut's southern suburbs, have intensified in recent weeks as part of an offensive against Hezbollah that has also killed hundreds of civilians.

In Gaza, at least 43,020 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023. An estimated 1,139 people were killed and more than 200 captured in Israel's Hamas-led attacks that day.
