A man from San Rafael, south of Petaluma, is killed in a crash in Marin County

A San Rafael man died in a crash Monday afternoon in Marin County south of Petaluma, authorities said.

According to the California Highway Patrol's Marin County office, the crash was reported at 3:41 p.m. on Point Reyes Petaluma Road near McEvoy Ranch.

The site is approximately 5 miles south of Petaluma.

According to investigators, the 24-year-old was driving west in a Ford Explorer when he left the road, crashed into a dirt embankment and his vehicle rolled onto its roof.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his name was not released.

According to the CHP, a 22-year-old woman from San Rafael was a passenger and got out of the Ford alone.

The CHP is investigating the crash, although officials ruled out alcohol as a cause.

The road was closed for about three hours Monday while the investigation took place.
