Promising Italian ski racer Matilde Lorenzi has died of her injuries following a training accident in northern Italy, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation said on Tuesday. She was 19.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Matilde Lorenzi,” said the world ski association. “Matilde tragically died after a fall during a training session on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales.”

Lorenzi was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Bolzano after her fall, but did not recover from her injuries. The skier from Villarbasse, near Turin, was assigned to the Italian army and her death was announced by the National Defense Ministry.

She competed in the Junior World Championships last season and placed sixth in the downhill and eighth in the super-G. She also took part in the second-tier European Cup and became Italian junior overall champion and super-G champion last year. Her sister Lucrezia competed in the slalom in the World Cup series.
