Bronx crime statistics show a sharp increase in murders, burglaries and grand thefts compared to last month: NYPD – Bronx Times

The number of reported murders, burglaries and grand thefts across the Bronx increased in the 28 days from Sept. 30 to Oct. 27 compared to the same period last year, according to the NYPD's latest crime statistics.

The number of murders in the Bronx rose 50% in the 28 days ending October 27 compared to the previous year – from six reported cases to nine.

The largest increase in murders was in the 40th District, which includes Port Morris, Mott Haven and Melrose. There were two murders in the precinct during the 28-day period, compared to none during the same period last year.

Burglaries across the Bronx increased 25.8% year-over-year, from 190 cases during the 28-day period in 2023 to 239 in 2024.

The largest increase in burglaries occurred in both the 43rd District, which oversees Westchester Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, White Plains Road and Parkchester, and the 45th District, which includes Throggs Neck, Co-op City and City Island . Burglaries increased in the 43rd District from 11 last year to 27 this year and in the 45th District from 14 last year to 30 this year.

Major thefts across the county increased, rising 11.9% over the 28-day period, from 664 in 2023 to 743 in 2024.

In addition to burglaries, the 43rd District also saw the most significant changes when it came to reported grand thefts. Cases there rose dramatically year-over-year, from 51 last year to 91 this year.

Another serious crime with a notable increase over the previous year during the 28-day period was rape. The number of reported rapes increased by 26.9%, from 26 in 2023 to 33 in 2024. However, this new number is a slight decrease from the 37 reported in September 2024.

The biggest increase in reported rapes in October 2024 was in the 48th District, which stretches along Arthur Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway from Crotona Park to the southern border. Cases there rose from none last year to four this year.

Year-over-year, the total number of major crimes reported for the 28-day period ending October 27 – murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, grand larceny and vehicle theft – increased 4.06% from a year ago 2,268 to 2,360 . The sharp increase in burglaries and serious thefts contributed significantly to this change.

In the year to October 27, the number of serious crimes rose slightly compared to the ten-month period in 2023. During this period there was an increase of 1.99%, from 24,637 in 2023 to 25,128 in 2024.
