Wilmington mother convicted in death of her 2-month-old son

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A Wilmington mother who investigators say killed her 2-month-old son due to unsafe sleeping conditions has been sentenced to prison.

According to District Attorney Rebecca Donaldson, 25-year-old Mackenzie Reed pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. She received credit for the seven months she has already served in prison and will now begin four years of supervised probation.

Reed faces 16 to 29 months (one year and four months to two years and five months) in prison if she violates the terms of her probation.

“A Wilmington Police Department investigation revealed that in October 2023, 25-year-old Reed smoked marijuana and ingested THC gummies before co-sleeping with her two-month-old son. Reed had been informed by hospital staff and social services about the dangers of co-sleeping. According to the Medical Examiner, “Reed’s infant son died of asphyxiation due to an unsafe sleeping environment,” the release said.
