Street racing in Virginia goes viral: Elon Musk shares video of the showdown between Cybertruck and Lamborghini

A street racing video shot in Tysons, Virginia, is going viral, with more than 75 million views on social media after Elon Musk shared it.

The video, which is less than 30 seconds long, shows a blue Lamborghini driving a Tesla Cybertruck on Leesburg Pike or Route 7. (The Cybertruck wins, which is why Musk re-shared the video).

Ryan Haggerty works nearby and heard the race before he saw it. He said it happened late last week around 2 p.m

The clip shows a crowd lined up on the sidewalk with cell phones outstretched, recording the fast race.

Another angle on Instagram shows the view from the passenger of the Lamborghini.

Haggerty said he often sees supercars trying to compete in the area – but it's usually late at night.

Mansour Ghaderi is often near Tysons – and said aggressive driving impressed him a few weeks ago.

“There was a guy who chased me to the Tysons Corner parking lot, came out and stuck a gun in my stomach because I wasn't driving fast enough,” Ghaderi said. “I said, 'I didn't know you were following me.'”

Street racing is banned in Virginia as a form of reckless driving.

Fairfax police formed a task force earlier this year to crack down on car meetings and street takeovers – and said it had been effective at a legislative meeting of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning.

Still, others who have seen this viral video say they're happy to watch it as long as it's safe.

“Usually it seems like they’re pretty smart about it,” Haggerty said. “I want people to be safe. I like coming home without anyone getting hit by a car or being absolutely terrified because it scared me when I heard it.”

“If it's a busy intersection, play it safe, but it's up to your discretion whether you can pay all the tickets, hey, move on,” a woman who saw the video said, laughing.

Fairfax County police said officers in their traffic division are actively investigating the incident. It's not clear what charges, if any, the drivers face.

This summer, Maryland passed a law allowing police to impose tougher penalties for illegal street racing.
