A man charged with assaulting an MNPD patrol car is surrendering, according to police

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Metro Nashville Police said the man accused of hitting an MNPD patrol car early Tuesday morning has surrendered.

Carlos Esquivel, 22, turned himself in to MNPD on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said Esquivel was driving recklessly at a high rate of speed on Korean Veterans Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. when a patrol officer initiated a traffic stop.

In an attempt to escape the traffic stop, police say Esquivel began eating donuts on Interstate 24 West when he then hit the patrol car and fled up the entrance ramp.

According to police, Officer Joe Medina was taken to a hospital as a result of the accident. He was treated and released Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators managed to run Esquivel's license plate on his Challenger and identified him as the driver.

Esquivel was charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, felony evading arrest, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury.

He was booked on $27,500 bond.
