Kamala Harris hosts election night rally at Howard University

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, plans to spend election night at her alma mater, Howard University in Washington, according to three people familiar with the planning.

A source said the campaign will likely hold its election night event at the Quad, although the exact location on campus could change.

NBC News has reported that Harris' campaign was eyeing the university where Harris earned her bachelor's degree as a potential venue for its election night headquarters.

Harris' roots at the historically black college run deep. In a letter published this month by The Hilltop, the student newspaper, Harris recalled “so many fond memories” of her time at the university, which she nicknamed “The Mecca.”

“I know that my time at Howard has shaped me into the person I am today. At Howard we learn that we have the ability to be great and that we also have the responsibility to work hard every day to fulfill that potential,” Harris wrote.

She also committed to Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first historically black sorority at Howard, in 1986.

Republican nominee Donald Trump's campaign team said it will host an election night party at a convention center in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he also has a resort. The campaign has not announced Trump's plans for election night.

Harris doesn't campaign in Washington very often. News of her election night plans comes on the day she was scheduled to give a speech at the Ellipse Square near the White House.

Harris is expected to urge Americans to “turn the tide” on her Republican rival in her speech Tuesday night, a senior Harris campaign official told NBC News. Shortly before the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Trump addressed his supporters on the Ellipse.
