A man is arrested on suspicion of killing a woman in a Hong Kong park

HONG KONG – A foreign man living in Hong Kong has been arrested on suspicion of killing a Southeast Asian woman at a waterfall in a park in Chinese territory.

The woman, aged about 25, worked as a domestic worker in Hong Kong but did not work for the suspect, Police Commissioner Sin Kwok-ming told reporters on Tuesday evening.

The woman went with the suspect to the waterfall at a park in Pok Fu Lam on Hong Kong Island on Sunday evening, but he stormed off alone in a taxi after staying there for about half an hour, police said.

On Monday morning, residents discovered the woman's body floating in the pond below the waterfall, Sin said.

An initial autopsy revealed that the woman drowned after being hit in the head with an unspecified hard object. Sin said the woman had injuries to her head and limbs.

The suspect and his wife, a Hong Kong woman, traveled to mainland China before officers arrested them on their return to the city on Tuesday, Sin said. The man was arrested on suspicion of murder, his wife on suspicion of aiding and abetting criminals.

The man has a Hong Kong ID card, but police did not say which country he or the victim came from.

“We found so many inappropriate things related to the man who was arrested. He did not report to the police and left Hong Kong immediately after the incident. Some evidence involving him also disappeared,” Sin said.

The investigation continued. The man and his wife were still in custody and had not been charged as of Wednesday morning, police said.

“This case is about someone’s life and we take it very seriously. We will carefully investigate every detail to bring out the truth and bring justice to the deceased,” Sin said.
