Kansas House hopeful Kyler Sweely responds after video leaks

House Democrats accused a Republican candidate for a Hutchinson seat in the Kansas House of Representatives of inappropriate behavior after video clips surfaced that appear to show him jumping on top of a supposedly unconscious woman and holding a pillow over her face despite facing her Arm in it moves video.

The two clips posted on Reddit last less than 10 seconds. The first shows contestant Kyler Sweely being told to “leave,” whereupon he jumps onto a woman lying on a bed. The second image shows Sweely holding a pillow over the woman's head.

The anonymous user who posted the video claimed that Sweely “jumped on an unconscious girl in an apartment in Wichita and covered her face with a pillow.” The user also said that law enforcement has the videos.

“This is disgusting,” the user wrote. “The mood in this video is not good. I hope the girl is okay.”

Sweely said the video was filmed after a double date with friends. He called the publication of the video an attempt to distort what happened in order to score political points before the election.

“I'm honestly disappointed that politics has come to this point – taking some old videos from a double date with friends – just us hanging out and being silly – and now trying to twist them and use them against me, to score political points. “It's creepy that someone kept these videos for years only to take them out of context for political reasons,” Sweely said in a Facebook post.

He also shared an audio recording, purportedly from the woman in the video, who he said chose not to share her name for security and privacy reasons. In it, she says nothing inappropriate happened and repeats Sweely's argument that the release was politically motivated.

“Releasing this video honestly makes me feel very uncomfortable and completely exploited,” she said.

House Minority Leader Vic Miller, D-Topeka, called on Republican leadership in the state to convict Sweely and called on law enforcement to conduct an investigation to determine whether crimes were committed.

“The perpetrators claim that the actions in the video are all a joke, and even if that is the case – which is not clear from actually viewing the video – there is absolutely nothing funny or humorous about sexual assault or the attempts to simulate it.” said Miller. “This is particularly true when those involved are in power and strive for power.” To even make this explanation is absurd.”
