Family mourns young mother shot in Clovis home

CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) — Family members are mourning the death of a young mother who was shot to death in her Clovis home over the weekend.

21-year-old Breaja Jones was not only a mother, but also an aunt, sister and daughter.

“She was such a sweet soul and for someone to take her life so early is beyond heartbreaking,” said Tracie Walker, Breaja’s mother.

Jones was shot to death in her own home on Saturday while several people were present to witness the horrific crime.

That day became her family's worst nightmare.

“Even though everything was normal, it literally changed in an instant for us,” Brishae Allen said.

Clovis police identified the suspect as 21-year-old Tavion Tapscott.

They say he left the scene but later turned himself in.

Tracie confirms that Tavion previously had a relationship with Breaja.

She adds that he is the father of Breaja's two-year-old daughter Jaliah.

“For him to do this, to take my baby, to leave my precious little grandchild without a mother and ultimately without a father. It’s terrible,” Tracie said.

As Breaja's loved ones come together during this difficult time, they are focused on ensuring her memory is never forgotten.

“Loving, kind and no matter how much she wanted to do for herself, she always, always made sure her family was comfortable,” Brishae explained.

They say that to know her is to love her, from her calm side to her wild side.

The young charter school graduate wanted to pursue phlebotomy therapy and continue helping others.

But at the center of her world was her little girl.

“As soon as she had her daughter, she said I had to do it, I had to shake something for my baby, she called it a dream, and she said I had to do it to dream,” Brishae said.

As her loved ones now face the nightmare of Breaja's loss, they hope other families do not have to suffer the same tragedy due to domestic violence.

“Get out while you have a life while you live. Get out while you have the opportunity to love your children, while you have the opportunity to love your family, and don't think that there is anything too strong that can stop you from getting out of there.

The family would also like to thank their neighbors and the community for their help and support so far.

They would like to add that their daughter is a blessing and a great extension of Breaja who will live on.
