Hudson Valley man jailed for murder, convicted of another crime

A Hudson Valley man who murdered a 21-year-old woman in 2021 has been convicted of a crime against the mother of his child.

On Tuesday, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that Cornelius Stubbs, 53, of Newburgh, was convicted by a jury in Orange County Court.

Stubbs was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder for ordering another man to kill a Newburgh woman. The crime happened 13 years ago.

“Thirteen years ago, this defendant attempted to kill a woman and avoided detection by ordering someone else to kill her,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “This cowardly attempt was unsuccessful and the tireless efforts of law enforcement officers and prosecutors in this case enabled the jury to reach a fair verdict.

On Oct. 2, 2011, Stubbs attempted to kill the mother of one of his children while she was at her home on Washington Street in the town of Newburgh by having another man enter her home to kill her, officials say .

“The evidence at trial established that a court had previously issued a protective order to protect the woman from Stubbs when he ordered the as-yet-unidentified accomplice to kill her. The victim was shot four times during the attack,” the DA’s office said in a news release.

Stubbs is already serving life in prison for murder

In 2022, Stubbs was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He was convicted of all 31 charges against him, including first-degree murder.

Stubbs was convicted of murdering 21-year-old Chelsea Debidin of Walden.
