After an argument breaks out in Highland Park, a bystander is shot

RICHMOND, Va. – Police continued their search Tuesday night for two men who Crime Insider sources said were involved in an argument on Richmond's north side that resulted in shots being fired.

Crime Insider sources told Jon Burkett that an argument broke out between two men near a traffic circle in the Highland Park area that ended with shots being fired and an innocent bystander being struck by a bullet.

Some workers in the area said they heard screaming and then the sound of gunfire.

“I definitely didn’t expect it to come to this, especially in Highland Park,” said Pastor Valerie Coley.

Coley was on his way through the area to visit a customer.

“In broad daylight … this is not normal,” Coley said. “It's really something that amazes me that we can't resolve conflicts without ending in gun violence.”

The victim's injury is not life-threatening. According to a witness, there was a trail of blood from the corner of Second Avenue to a nearby gas station, where the victim got into a car and was driven to the hospital.

Coley, who volunteers with the city's Trauma Healing Response Network, said it's clear more needs to be done to combat violence in the Richmond community.

“We work really hard at the Trauma Healing Response Network, we work hard in the areas that we are assigned. But it will take everyone’s collective effort,” Coley said. “We must put aside our differences and stop trying to hurt or harm each other emotionally, physically or politically. I'm tired of it. The real gangs are in these positions and it’s sad because they can’t look beyond themselves.”

Sources said both men ran away after the shots were fired. Police are reviewing nearby surveillance footage to find clues to suspects.
