New York woman convicted in drug-related death of 14-year-old girl

KINGSTON – An Ulster County woman who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of her intimate partner's 14-year-old daughter was sentenced Tuesday to 2 1/3 to 7 years in state prison.

Ulster County Court Judge Bryan Rounds handed down the sentence for Kristin Delsanto, 29, of Lake Katrine.

Delsanto pleaded guilty last month to second-degree manslaughter, a felony in connection with the death of her partner Collin Schlegel's 14-year-old daughter as a result of the use of illegal narcotics.

According to the Ulster County District Attorney's Office, on August 2, 2022, the City of Ulster Police Department received a 911 call regarding an unresponsive 14-year-old girl.

Although emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ulster Police detectives conducted a year-long investigation and established a timeline of events leading to the girl's death.

This investigation revealed that Schlegel and Delsanto were aware of and contributed to the child's drug and alcohol use. Delsanto went with the child to retrieve the last amount of illegal narcotics she had consumed, which later led to her death.

State Police and the Ulster County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation.

“Kristin Delsanto directly placed this child in danger by providing and supplying her with a variety of narcotics and alcohol, which ultimately led to her death,” Senior Prosecutor Luba Reznikova said in a statement.

Ulster County District Attorney Emmanuel C. Nneji added: “The abuse of a child by giving him such a poison that kills him, especially by the hands to which his care and well-being is entrusted, is unforgivable and calls for accountability pulled.”

Delsanto was represented by Clifford Owens of the Ulster County Office of the Public Defender. He could not immediately be reached for comment.

The public prosecutor's office did not provide any information about the current status of the proceedings against Schlegel.
