Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi has died at the age of 19 after a training accident

The ski community is mourning.

Italian alpine skier Matilda Lorenzi died on October 29 at the age of 19 after falling during a training session in Val Senales, northern Italy, according to a statement on social media from the International Ski and Snowboard Federation.

“The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) expresses its deepest condolences following the tragic loss of Matilde Lorenzi,” the statement said. “We are deeply saddened by the death of Matilde Lorenzi, according to the Italian Ministry of Defense, which expressed its deepest condolences to the 19-year-old Italian Army athlete.”

“FIS becomes FISI President Flavio Roda and the entire Italian winter sports community mourns, including coaches, athletes, teammates, the Federal Council and all FISI employees,” the association continued. “FISI mourns, stands with her family, friends and all who cherished Matilde, and honors her memory today and forever.”

After the accident, the teenager was taken by helicopter to a hospital in the nearby city of Bolzano, where she eventually succumbed to her injuries, according to Olympics.com.
