Three teens charged with murder of Oakland County deputy

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced that three juveniles have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of an Oakland County deputy in June.

You can watch the full press conference at the end of the article.

Oakland County Deputy Bradley Reckling was shot in the line of duty after working with a car theft unit to search for a stolen car.

Raymone Debose, 18, of Clinton Township, Marquis Goins, 18, of Detroit, and Karim Moore, 18, of Clinton Township, were arrested and charged in connection with Reckling's murder.

Worthy said Goins and Moore were in the cars at the time of the shooting and were accomplices of Debose and a car theft ring group since 2023.

The car theft ring included at least four carjackings, the theft of four other cars and several firearms charges.

Worthy said there could be additional charges in the investigation into the car theft ring. The prosecutor said the thefts would span Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties starting in November 2023.

background

Deputy Bradley Reckling was working for the auto theft unit and was pursuing a stolen vehicle in Detroit on June 22 when the suspects opened fire, striking him multiple times and killing him.

Reckling was among three officers from the Auto Theft Unit who searched for a stolen 2022 Chevrolet Equinox. The vehicle was stolen from Red Oaks Waterpark in Oakland County sometime between 1:00 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Reckling was in an unmarked car when he located the stolen vehicle and began pursuing it, meaning no dashcam footage is available. The preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle suddenly stopped, the individuals in the stolen vehicle exited and opened fire on Deputy Reckling. He was hit several times, including in the head and torso.

“The car suddenly stopped. Individuals exited the stolen vehicle and opened fire on our deputy. It was an ambush. That obviously triggered a whole bunch of things. The deputy was struck in the head, chest and torso area. The officer's emergency call went out at 10:50 p.m. Apparently the Detroit Police Department and the Michigan State Police Department flooded the area very quickly; I want to thank and commend them for that,” Bouchard said in a press conference on June 23, 2024.

The officer's emergency call came at 10:50 p.m. Detroit police and Michigan State Police rushed to the scene and set up a cordon. Three people were arrested within this radius.

Prosecutors, police chief and sheriff respond to the charges

“When we started working on this case, we had no idea it would lead to where it did. Deputy Recking, who thought he was just recovering a stolen car, actually became embroiled in a violent and wide-ranging criminal enterprise involving car theft and carjacking.”

Prosecutor Kym Worthy

“On behalf of the Detroit Police Department, we thank Attorney Worthy and your staff for their careful and professional handling of this complex case.

Thank you to the Detroit Homicide Detectives and the Michigan State Police for your tireless pursuit of justice for Deputy Reckling and his family. Our deepest condolences go out to the Reckling family and our law enforcement colleagues at the Oakland County Sheriff's Department. We hope today’s announcement helps a little in your grief and healing process.”

Detroit Police Chief James White

“Deputy Reckling’s murder was devastating for the entire community, especially law enforcement and especially his family. Today is important because it is a first step towards justice.”

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald

“It is one of our highest priorities to hold those responsible for the senseless murder of Deputy Brad Reckling accountable.

We appreciate the work the Detroit Police Department and the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office have done to date and look forward to seeing the perpetrators receive the maximum sentence possible. While for many this will never fill the gap between husband, father, son, brother and friend, it will at least provide some semblance of justice.”

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard

I remember the deputy, Bradley Reckling

According to Bouchard, Reckling has a pregnant wife, a one-year-old child, a four-year-old child and a five-year-old child.

His family wanted the public to hear from people who worked with Reckling and knew who he was and what he was like. Reckling had worked at the Rochester Hills substation and had recently transferred to the auto theft division.

During the June press conference, Bouchard read the following statements from Reckling's colleagues:

Rochester Hills Substation Commander: “Detective Brad Reckling was one of the best deputies and detectives I have ever worked with. He was one of the hardest working police officers I knew. I and many others will miss him very much. He touched so many personally with his larger-than-life personality. Brad was on patrol in Rochester Hills before joining our detective agency there, and there was a bank robbery that some thought was unsolvable. Brad spent hours researching the vehicle, eventually found it for sale on Facebook Marketplace and ultimately solved the case. And that was just an example of Brad’s work ethic.”

Deputy Nicholas Bohun: “Brad was always there to help. He loved his family more than anything. He was a great police officer, but even a better friend, father and husband.”

Deputy Nathan Rogers: Brad and I grew up together in this department. From working in prison to studying for promotions to persevering and graduating from the academy together. Brad was one of the most selfless colleagues and one of the most dedicated husbands I have ever seen for Jackie, and the best father to his girls. There is no other way to describe him other than simply the best person.

Deputy Matthew Morrison: Brad was a loving husband, father and great friend. He loved nature. He was a great fisherman, loved hunting, and enjoyed growing his farm and raising animals. Brad spent several months remodeling his home to give his wife and three girls the best place they could call home. Anyone who knew Brad knows that it doesn't take long for him to start cracking jokes and making him laugh. He was a great worker and a great friend who would do anything for anyone. He was a prime example of what great parents, husbands and friends mean and he is loved by many and will be truly missed.

Bouchard said anyone who would like to support Reckling's family during this time can contribute to the Mission Oakland charity. He said 100% of donations would go to the family with no fees or deductions. Anyone who would like to donate should state in the note that the money is intended for Deputy Reckling.
