Billy Napier and Kirby Smart discuss whether home-and-home is being considered for the future of the Florida-Georgia game

Jacksonville is the traditional home of the FloridaGeorgia Due to stadium renovations, Atlanta and Tampa Bay will reportedly host in 2026 and 2027. Fans have long been calling for the matchup to be a true home game and are hoping Athens and Gainesville will host. That won't happen, at least in the foreseeable future, as a neutral location remains in place.

The game has not been played on campus since 1994 (Gainesville) and 1995 (Athens), when there was a home game. Before that you have to go back to 1932. Only seven of the 102 matches took place at the home stadium of Florida or Georgia.

Has anyone ever thought about setting up a home for 2026 and 2027? Billy Napier addressed the situation Wednesday, saying revenue is ultimately the reason the Bulldogs and Gators will play in Atlanta and Tampa Bay. Even when considering the game's future in Jacksonville, Napier calls the money brought in a big factor.

“Kirby and I agree that it would be great to play a home game, but we also know that having that game at a neutral site will generate tremendous revenue,” the Florida head coach said. “Money makes the world go round and certainly there is a significant difference in the amount of income generated.

“We play in Jacksonville, so there’s a historical context to it, but there’s also a revenue component. I think the neutral location will offer the same sales opportunities and is ultimately the reason for the decision.”

Kirby Smart I didn't have much information on the topic and couldn't remember if there were any discussions in Athens/Gainesville.

“I really can’t remember,” Smart said. “…I really wasn’t involved in those discussions. I think that may have been a consideration. But I don't remember when. I can’t even tell you why.”

Both head coaches are fully focused on this year's edition of the game, which will be played in Jacksonville. Georgia is on a three-game winning streak in this rivalry and Smart has won six of eight contests played since taking over. Napier is still waiting for his first win and hopes it comes on Saturday.
