US airstrikes target several locations in Syria, killing up to 35 IS fighters

WASHINGTON— The U.S. military struck several camps of the Islamic State group in Syria this week, killing up to 35 militants, U.S. Central Command said Wednesday.

The airstrikes in the desert of central Syria took place on Monday evening and targeted several locations and senior leaders of the group. The attacks followed several joint operations with Iraqi forces targeting IS fighters in Iraq.

Pentagon officials said the Islamic State group still poses a threat in the region, but it is no longer as powerful as it was a decade ago, when the militants swept across Iraq and Syria and wide swathes of both brought countries under their control.

U.S. Central Command said recent attacks in Syria would impact the group's ability to plan, organize and carry out attacks against civilians and U.S. and allied forces in the region. It said there was no evidence of civilian casualties in the attacks.
