West Chester officer charged after being accused of “possible law and policy violations.”

CINCINNATI (WXIX) — A Butler County grand jury indicted a now-former West Chester police officer on Wednesday after accusing him of “possible law and policy violations” within the department, said Barb Wilson, a spokeswoman for the West Chester Police Department in an explanation.

Wilson says Michelle Berling, who resigned on October 28, will be charged with unauthorized access to the Ohio Law Enforcement Gateway (OHLEG) and tampering with evidence and records following an independent criminal investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI). has carried out.

During the second week of August, officers and employees of the West Chester Police Department became aware of “possible law and policy violations” that Berling had committed, Wilson said.

Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser says one of the charges relates to Berling's use of a police database for personal reasons. The reason is unclear.

Wilson explains that the department briefly reviewed the data and then turned the investigation over to BCI to conduct an independent criminal investigation.

The exact details of what happened are still unclear.

The police are still investigating.
