Surprise, the new Death Note game is an Among Us-like social deduction crime thriller

The rumored new Death Note game is real, it's a social deduction game in the style of Among Us and it's coming soon. Bandai Namco has officially revealed Death Note Killer Within in a PlayStation blog post after Sony accidentally revealed it first by saying that Death Note Killer Within would be part of the PS Plus lineup in November 2024.

In Death Note Killer Within, you take on the role of either Kira, the one with the Death Note who judges other players – in other words, the murderer – or L, a detective trying to find clues find and nail the killer before he strikes again. There is also a Kira follower role and an investigator role, both of which support either Kira or L in their tasks. All of this takes place on a tabletop that recreates a city, with creepy little puppet figures representing the player characters as they complete tasks.

Kira needs a player ID in order to judge them, i.e. kill them, which she gets by tailing them and hanging around for a certain amount of time – just a little suspicious. Kira followers can steal player IDs and even swap the Death Note to avoid last-minute detection. Investigators and L collect clues by speaking to NPCs and investigating suspicious incidents, and L can also set up surveillance systems or influence discussions during the meeting phase.

In addition, players from both teams must complete objectives in the city. If either team manages to max out their progress bar, they automatically win the round, which seems a little disjointed but perhaps makes more sense in-game.

Death Note Killer Within will be released on November 5, 2024 on PS5, PS4 and PC via Steam.
