Correctional officer charged in inmate's death agrees to plea deal

(WSAZ) – A correctional officer charged in the death of an inmate has agreed to a guilty plea.

Mark Holdren was charged, along with five other officers and a former lieutenant, with covering up the use of unlawful force against an inmate in retaliation for his earlier attempt to leave his assigned pod.

A motion to schedule a guilty plea hearing was filed on October 25.

Holden faces a maximum sentence of up to life in prison.

If the court accepts the plea agreement, Holden could face up to 360 months in prison, a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or twice the gross capital loss resulting from the conduct, and payment of restitution. Holden also faces a maximum of five years of supervised release.

The indictment alleges that Holdren, Snyder and Walters struck and injured the inmate while he was bound and handcuffed, and that Jacob Boothe, 25, and Ashley Toney, 23, failed to intervene in the unlawful attack led to the death of the prisoner.

Additionally, the indictment alleges that Walters, Holdren and Boothe submitted incident reports that contained false and misleading information and concealed the fact that officers assaulted the inmate.
