Lady Gaga battles past versions of herself in the new music video for “Disease.”

Lady Gaga has inhabited many different versions of herself over the past decade of her career, and in the new video for “Disease,” she goes toe-to-toe with some of them.

In the first big taste of what the pop star's seventh album has to offer, Gaga is at her best in the video for the first single, as terrible things begin to happen in an otherwise seemingly sleepy suburb, where a version of herself roams around with bloodshot eyes, who could really use some ointment. With an all-black outfit and matching mask, this look is reminiscent of the avant-garde Gaga that most people may know.

However, at a certain point, other versions of Gaga fight each other and sprint down the street dancing. Gaga herself said in a post on Instagram: “I think a lot about the relationship I have with my own inner demons. It has never been easy for me to endure being seduced by chaos and turmoil. It makes me feel claustrophobic.”

“'Disease' is about facing that fear, facing myself and my inner darkness, and realizing that sometimes I can't win or escape the parts of myself that scare me,” she writes about the single. “I can try to run away from them, but they are still a part of me and I can run and run, but eventually I will meet that part of me again, if only for a moment. Dance, transform, run, clean. Back to myself again and again. Ultimately, this integration is nice for me because it belongs to me and I have learned to deal with it.”

Her fans and critics seem to be loving it, with one fan sharing his thoughts on the video in a post to X, writing: “We dreamed of having that Lady Gaga back. I’m in tears.”

“Lady Gaga is crazy for this,” another fan posted, presumably positively.

“This is cinema!” writes another fan and looks at the takes.

Looking at the numbers, fan account Lady Gaga Now shared that the artist is “currently topping the entire U.S. iTunes Top 10 combined in sales.”
