Waco PD reports an 8% drop in crime rates in September, but assaults are on the rise

TRANSCRIPT:

Ricky Terry has lived in West Waco for 27 years.

During that time, he has seen a number of violent crimes in our community.

“It must have been 1:30 in the morning when they shot through my neighbor's window, hitting the frame and breaking the window,” Terry said.

Let's break down some newly sent crime statistics 25 messages' Marc Monroy from Waco Police Department spokeswoman Cierra Shipley.

  • Overall, crime has fallen by 8% compared to September 2023
  • West Waco has seen the highest increase in assault cases, up 34%
  • Assaults fell by 5% overall

The numbers show overall crime in Waco fell 8% last month compared to a year ago.

Violent crime, which includes murder, robbery, sexual assault and assault, fell 3%.

“We have to take care of each other and ourselves,” Terry said.

But there are some parts of the city where the number of attacks is increasing.

Seven additional attacks were reported in Corridor 5 on US-84 in September compared to last year.

The Landon Branch area increased by five cases, while West Waco saw the largest increase with 16 cases.

“Thank you for stopping by and checking us out because I didn’t know about the new rates; “I’m just here, like everyone else, to know about the attacks,” Terry said.

Terry told 25 messages' Marc Monroy is grateful for the opportunities he has received over the past few years.

“I know it moved,” Terry said. “First it was in North Waco at the youth center, and now it's coming here to West Waco, but Lord help us, we don't have to deal with this anymore.”
