Death of a newborn in the Bronx: Little girl found dead in the yard in front of the Soundview building

SOUNDVIEW, Bronx (WABC) — The body of a newborn baby was found outside a Bronx apartment building on Wednesday.

According to police, the newborn girl was found around 11:15 a.m. in the courtyard of a building on St. Lawrence Avenue

The child was discovered by a construction worker. She was unconscious and unresponsive as the umbilical cord was still attached.

The contractor then notified the construction manager, who told Eyewitness News he wished he had known sooner.

“I was like crazy because they say the baby was there for almost three or four days and he was lying next to my living room,” said the property manager, named Carlos. “I literally could have looked out the window and seen the baby.”

EMS pronounced her dead at the scene and the medical examiner will determine her cause of death.

Investigators spoke with residents of the building and asked tenants if they knew of anyone living there who was recently pregnant.

Residents said they were in shock.

“Why don’t you take the baby to church?” If you don’t want the baby, take it to the church or have someone come to look after the baby,” said a resident.

The law allows a parent to drop off a baby at a hospital or an occupied police or fire station without having to give his or her name.

According to police sources, officers believe that a young girl, who was hiding her pregnancy, gave birth in the building and threw the baby in the backyard. It's an area that seems difficult to reach.

So far there have been no arrests.
