3 Cape Cod musicians send vocal messages with music videos

Three Outer Cape musicians are urging people to get out and vote with separate videos they've made since September: “Vote 4 Mom” by longtime Wellfleet resident Harriet Jerusha Korim; “Smash!” by Zoe Lewis of Provincetown; and “We the People” by Orleans singer-songwriter-instrumentalist Julie Charland.

“I wrote 'Vote 4 Mom' before Kamala Harris was on the ticket. I've been thinking about how we can get people to vote. I thought about mom and apple pie. And Mother Earth was a big part of it too. Even though people haven’t talked about it, climate change is a problem,” Korim said in an interview last week.

“Vote 4 Mom” features 60 people, mostly Outer Cape locals, singing the lyrics or holding handwritten signs, she said. It has received 1,700 views on YouTube.

The evolution of “Smash” (the glass ceiling) is cataloged on Lewis' Facebook page: She wrote the call-to-action anthem for her opening performance at the Indigo Girls concert on September 1 at Provincetown Town Hall. On September 12, she invited her followers to come with her to Provincetown to record a video. Scores of fans did, wearing Harris T-shirts and stopping traffic. Over the weekend, Lewis posted a link to the video, urging fans to download the Vote for Kamala song for free.

“I will keep passing this on until we have our first female president!” Lewis wrote.

Charland's video, uploaded two weeks ago, shows her in a field of bright pink flowers. In her introduction on YouTube she writes: “My song is about the importance of voting, tolerance and hopes for the future of our country.”

The song invokes:

“Tolerate opinions, even if you think they are wrong

Everyone has the right to sing their own song…

“If you’ve thought; The system is broken

Then make a difference, get out there and vote.”

“The video features Charland's singing, playing and impressive whistling – as well as her joyful dancing through the lush, fairytale flower gardens of Wild Flower Pottery in Brewster,” Korim wrote in an email commenting on the “Get out the vote” songs .
