Gigabyte unveils the AMD Ryzen 9800X3D CPU (again) and declares "X3D Turbo Mode" for its AM5 motherboards - but don't get your hopes up too high • stonescape

AMD's Ryzen 9800X3D is now within reach, and Gigabyte has given us a look at a new feature on its latest motherboards that boosts the performance of 3D V-Cache chips (and other Ryzen CPUs).

VideoCardz points to the revelations, which come from a video (and presentation slides contained therein) uploaded by Gigabyte to YouTube, informing owners of its AM5 motherboards that they will install the latest BIOS and have access to an “X3D Turbo mode.” can get a CPU that will speed up your work for games.

The Ryzen 9800X3D is mentioned – although it hasn't been officially confirmed yet, there are strong rumors that it is the only Zen 5 5%.

The motherboard maker says Tomb Raider gets a 5% boost, Horizon Zero Dawn gets a 4.5% boost, and Far Cry 6 gets a 3.5% boost with the 9800X3D in Turbo mode. However, we don't learn anything about the PC configuration or settings used here, aside from the fact that it's a measurement of Turbo Mode on versus turning the feature off.

Gigabyte explains that this is a one-click turbo mode (enabled in BIOS) that works with all X3D chips, including previous generations (not just 9800X3D or other Zen 5 X3D chips when they come to market), and in fact, it will deliver vanilla Ryzen processors will also receive a similar boost.

So this is good news for gamers who have a Ryzen CPU in a Gigabyte AM5 motherboard, not just X3D owners.

Analysis: Temper expectations and take a look under the hood

This is a bit strange, as previous leaks from Gigabyte suggested that X3D Turbo Mode could give PC games a huge boost (there was talk of up to 35%), and these are far more modest increases presented here – but they are still profits that are definitely worth it. (And if there were any big increases, they were probably always outliers of one kind or another – it's possible that the aforementioned numbers included both the EXPO memory overclock and that Turbo mode).

What does the function do under the hood? As VideoCardz notes, Turbo mode appears to turn off SMT (multi-threading with the CPU), which has benefits for gaming as well as fine-tuning aspects of power consumption and core distribution. The lack of SMT is why Gigabyte recommends turning on X3D Turbo mode only when gaming, as it's likely to impact the performance of your everyday apps (and especially demanding non-gaming workloads).

If the leaks are true, the Ryzen 9800X3D processor will offer an 8% performance increase for gaming compared to the Ryzen 7800X3D, and the gains from Turbo mode will come beyond that (but perhaps also applicable to the 7800X3D). although not quite to the same extent).
