The second day of the mass shooting defendant's trial begins

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – Wednesday, Oct. 23, was the second day of trial for the man charged in a 2023 mass shooting in downtown Shreveport.

Devin Owen Porter Jr. is accused of the mass shooting that left six people injured and one dead.

During the trial, jurors heard from emergency medical personnel who responded to the scene as well as several officers from the Shreveport Police Department. They stated that around 2 a.m. on March 25, 2023, they responded to the corner of Texas Street and Market Street in downtown Shreveport. They found several victims with gunshot wounds, including an unresponsive man.

An SPD officer testified that he was sitting in his patrol unit near Hearne and Midway when he saw a silver Hyundai Elantra drive by with a broken window. He began following the car to check the license plate and discovered the car was stolen. The officer turned on the unit's lights and attempted to stop the car. Then a chase began.

According to police, the Elantra reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour, went off the road several times and drove through people's backyards. The driver eventually fell into a ditch. Four people got out and ran away. Police said one of those people pointed a gun at police before running away.

Officers pursued the suspects and Porter was caught near the back gate of the Peach Tree Apartments. Police then searched the car and found two weapons (a 9mm pistol and a rifle), ammunition, blood in the back seat and a cell phone. Officers said they also found shell casings on the front of the car near the windshield wipers.

After repositioning the car for towing, officers said they found another rifle under the car.
