A crash on I-95 in Portsmouth leaves one person dead when a vehicle crosses the median again

PORTSMOUTH – A man died on Interstate 95 Wednesday night after crossing the median and hitting another car, according to New Hampshire State Police. It was the second fatal crash and third serious accident involving a vehicle crossing the median on I-95 in the Seacoast this month.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that a southbound vehicle crossed the median, became airborne and struck another northbound vehicle,” police posted on social media.

The identity of the driver who crossed the median and died was not immediately released. The northbound driver who was hit suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said. None of the vehicles had passengers.

State Police reported Wednesday evening that the crash occurred before 7 p.m. near mile marker 13 on I-95 in Portsmouth and the northbound lanes were closed as authorities responded and investigated.

According to police, due to the investigation, northbound traffic was diverted from Exit 3.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation is considering installing median barriers along Interstate 95, a spokesman for the state agency said after the fatal collision in Greenland. There were no plans for a possible installation or cost estimates.

Recent accidents on I-95 have involved vehicles crossing the median

Two people were killed and a third person was hospitalized after an accident on the highway in Greenland on October 16. A northbound driver, later identified as 24-year-old Steven Le of Methuen, Massachusetts, lost control, crossed the median into oncoming traffic, struck a car and later died, police said. The crash also killed southbound driver Leslie Lynn, 58, of Roanoke, Virginia.

On October 23, two people were seriously injured in a crash on I-95 in Greenland after a northbound vehicle crossed the median and struck a southbound car.

Last winter, a California woman was identified as the victim of a February crash on I-95 near the Portsmouth-Greenland line when the northbound car she was riding in lost control, rolled over, and entered the breakdown lane of the Southbound lane landed. The driver of the vehicle was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Jennifer Lane, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday morning.
