Father accused of kidnapping 9-year-old Pembroke daughter now faces first-degree murder charge

PEMBROKE, N.C. (WRAL) — The man accused of kidnapping his daughter now faces a first-degree murder charge.

9-year-old Mekiya Werrell Strickland was found safe after an Amber Alert was issued around 3 a.m. Wednesday. This was canceled later in the day.

According to the NC Center for Missing Persons, the 9-year-old girl was believed to be with her father, 50-year-old Claude Leslie Werrell, who was wanted for questioning in connection with a death investigation.

Claude Werrell has now been charged with murder.
