Dark Sky Films takes over US rights for crime thriller “The G”

The Playmaker has signed a US distribution deal with Dark Sky Films for Canadian crime thriller The G. Directed by Karl R. Hearne, the film follows Ann Hunter, also known as The G, as she fights against a corrupt elder care system.

“The G” will be represented at the American Film Market next week by Playmaker.

Inspired by real events, “The G” is a dark, suspenseful drama that combines crime and human emotions and is driven by an outstanding performance from Dale Dickey, who won Best Actress at the Bari Film Festival and Festival Fantasmagoria. The film also received a Special Jury Mention for Best Director at the Fantasia Film Festival and won the Best Screenplay award for Hearne at the Fantasmagoria festival.

“The G” played at Tallinn Black Nights, Glasgow Film Festival, Fantasia Film Festival, Fantaspoa and Reims Polar Film Festival.

This is Hearne's second feature film, following 2019's Touched, which was nominated for Best First Feature at the Canadian Screen Awards.

Ann Hunter, aka The G, and her husband retreat to a quiet suburb, but their peaceful life is shattered when a corrupt guardian confiscates their assets and locks them in a brutal “elderly care facility.” As a victim of an exploitative system, Ann teams up with her loyal granddaughter to fight for freedom and seek revenge. Inspired by real-life events, The G is a chilling winter noir that combines suspense, dark humor and emotion, driven by a compelling portrayal of resilience and defiance by Dickey in a rare, powerful lead role.

“Over the years, Dark Sky has positioned itself as an established distributor in the genre sector in the US market. “We are therefore very pleased that the esteemed Dark Sky team will now dedicate themselves to our thriller 'The G' and bring it to US cinemas,” said Moritz Heminnger, Head of Sales and Acquisitions.

The film is produced by 3Buck Productions.
