“Gumshoe” police have tracked down a man accused of planting two explosive devices at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino

A man faces up to 30 years in Florida state prison after authorities say he planted two remote-controlled explosive devices in two men's restrooms at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino last month.

During a press conference Thursday, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Seminole Police Department, the FBI and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of Brian Eckley.

According to authorities, Eckley planted the devices in the casino on the night of Sept. 29 and in the early morning hours of Sept. 30.

An employee found a device, reported it and the casino was evacuated.

When the second device was located, the casino was evacuated again.

Seminole Police and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad responded and secured both devices.

The Seminole Police Department contacted the FDLE and a joint investigation was initiated along with HCSO and the FBI.

“All we had this morning was an unknown suspect planting two devices in a public place, and he could do it again,” said Tampa Bay FDLE Special Agent in Charge Mark Brutnel. “We had no leads. We had nothing to go on with.”

Investigators determined that three days earlier, on September 25, an unknown man was behaving suspiciously in the casino. He was seen driving a white Ford Explorer, whose unique features allowed the team to identify its previous owner.

They learned that Brian Eckley had purchased the vehicle under an alias. He used a burner cell phone and paid in cash.

“It is also known that Eckley was arrested two days earlier, on September 25, by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for aggravated assault with a firearm,” Brutnel stated.

Authorities say forensic evidence is consistent between the two incidents.

“This individual did everything he could to hide his identity,” Brutnel said. “He used a mask, he used an alias, he used multiple burner cell phones, he used cash transactions.”

He added that in the surveillance video, Eckley changed the way he walked through the casino.

“He will be held accountable for his actions and actions that could have endangered many lives,” Brutnel added.

He was arrested on Wednesday, 30 days after the incident.

Eckley was charged with two counts: manufacturing, possessing, throwing, throwing, placing or firing destructive devices.

The incident is still under investigation.
