Man is accused of threatening to kill a woman and shooting at a Nashville officer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Metro Nashville Police say a man is facing charges after he allegedly threatened to kill a woman and shot at an officer in the early hours of Thursday.

Police said John Carney, 66, is accused of shooting at an officer who was responding to a reported domestic dispute around 2:30 a.m. on Plus Park Boulevard.

Officer Dylan Mercado reportedly saw Carney chasing a woman and screaming that he was going to kill her. As Mercado approached the woman, he heard a gunshot. The woman told him that Carney was armed.

“Officer Mercado asked Carney to drop his weapon. He fled and threw the 9mm pistol into a wooded area. The weapon was later recovered by an ATF dog,” MNPD said.

Eventually, Carney was arrested and charged with domestic violence, aggravated assault and aggravated assault on an officer. Mercado was not injured in that shooting.
