Speed ​​was a factor in a crash that killed two people in west Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – New details have been released about the deadly crash that killed two people on Freedom Drive in west Charlotte Wednesday morning.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said the accident occurred around 8:13 a.m. Oct. 30 in the 3200 block of Freedom Drive, which is in front of the Pizza Hut. There they found a Mitsubishi and a Dodge.

The Mitsubishi was driven by Gregory Matthew Thompson, 67, with Connie Lee Yates, 70, in the passenger seat. Both were killed at the scene.

The driver of the Dodge was identified as 34-year-old Tajarvis Deonte Wall. He and a young girl were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to investigators, Wall crashed into Thompson's car as it was making a U-turn. Wall's excessive speed is believed to be the cause of the crash.

Wall was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, no driver's license, improper lane use, child safety seat violations, speeding and a window tint violation.

The entrance lanes of Freedom Drive were closed for five hours while emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

Wall was given a $100,000 unsecured bond.
