A fire damaged a home in the Rancho Bernardo area on Wednesday and injured a firefighter, authorities said.

According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the fire spread to the two-story single-family home in the 11600 block of Via Firul shortly after 2 p.m.

When emergency services arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the attic. After about 30 minutes, part of the roof collapsed and firefighters had to leave the house.

According to the city administration, it took emergency services over an hour to extinguish the flames.

The injured firefighter was taken to the UC San Diego Burn Center with minor injuries, SDFD Battalion Chief Mark Reece said.

Two people who were in the house at the time the fire broke out were able to leave the house safely. The battalion chief said the Red Cross would help the family.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, SDFD said.
