Video shows arrest of Ellie Young's alleged murderer and ex-boyfriend

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Action News 5 has obtained video showing the arrest of Jackson Hopper, the suspect accused of murdering his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend Ellie Young at a breast cancer awareness march over the weekend.

The footage shows Lauderdale County officers forcibly arresting Hopper on the side of the road after he overturned his vehicle.

Hopper had a black eye when he appeared at his first court hearing on Monday.

Hopper, 26, is charged with first-degree murder in Young's death. He has since pleaded not guilty.

Officers responded to the shooting just before 12:20 a.m. Saturday at Shelby Farms Park, where the American Cancer Society's annual breast cancer awareness walk was taking place.

According to the affidavit, Young was found lying on the ground next to her Jeep Wrangler with multiple gunshot wounds.

She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 12:40 p.m

Witnesses said they saw Young parked in her Jeep Wrangler when a man in a white Honda CRV with a temporary Kentucky license plate drove up behind her, got out and fired two shots at her car.

Young got out of her Jeep and fell to the ground. According to witness statements, the gunman fired at least one more shot at her.

The attacker then got into his car and drove away from the scene.

Young's family told officials that the ex-couple's separation was recent.

Young recently pursued her dream of becoming a doctor, like her older sister, at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Hopper also faces charges in Tipton County including reckless driving, aggravated assault, evading arrest and more.

Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said his office has not requested bail in Hopper's case while he awaits a hearing.
