Who is Doug Emhoff? 10 Things You Should Know About Kamala Harris' Husband

4. It was a turbulent romance.

The morning after their first date, Emhoff allegedly wrote Harris an email. “I’m too old to play games or hide the ball,” they said. “I really like you and I want to see if we can do this.” The two married less than a year later in a civil ceremony held on a Friday afternoon at the Santa Barbara courthouse. Harris' younger sister Maya officiated.

5. He was a single father.

When Harris met Emhoff, he was divorced and had two young children. He shared custody with his first wife Kerstin. Harris has often spoken of being embraced by both her new stepchildren and Emhoff's first wife, and that her blended family had an easy relationship with one another. (“When [Doug and Kamala] started dating for the first time and [Kamala] Was [attorney general of California]I just thought: Wow, that's cool. Don’t ruin it!” Kerstin said Marie Claire in 2020.)

As reported in a 2018 report fashion Profile: Emhoff's son Cole graduated from Colorado College in May 2017 before working as an assistant at William Morris Endeavor and as an executive assistant at Plan B Entertainment. His younger sister Ella is a model and talented knitter.

6. He is quick on his feet.

As Harris spoke on stage at the MoveOn Big Ideas Forum in San Francisco in June 2019, an animal rights activist stormed onto the stage, grabbed the microphone from the then-senator and began speaking to the crowd. Harris was quickly led away, but along with a handful of others, Emhoff took action and jumped on the stage to help pull the protesters away. (You can watch the video here.) Then Emhoff tweeted a picture of herself and Harrisboth smiling (and he's wearing a “Kamala Harris for the People” sweatshirt) and writing, “Thanks for all the nice messages. We are good. I love @KamalaHarris and would do anything for her.”

7. He found a soulmate during the 2020 election campaign.

Early in Harris' first presidential campaign, Emhoff connected with Chasten Buttigieg, husband of Pete Buttigieg, and the two quickly became friends on social media. After an unflattering profile of Emhoff was published in 2019, Chasten posted a shout-out to his friend: “The irony of an article telling you to be yourself and in the same breath telling you to be someone else is * Bosses.” Kiss. deep sigh. Eye roll.* political life for campaign spouses. Be yourself, @douglasemhoff.” (Emhoff replied via tweet: “Dear @Chas10Buttigieg: I'm not crying, I just have something in my eyes. Thanks for the support. #spousessticktogether.”) In another post that included a picture of the two on the campaign trail, Emhoff wrote, “Just spent some time chatting with my friend @Chas10Buttigieg. Sometimes the only person you can talk to about going through something like this as a spouse is someone who is going through it as a spouse!”

8. He's a SoulCycle guy.

Emhoff was DJing with friends at SoulCycle in the West Hollywood district of Los Angeles when Harris learned that Joe Biden would be dropping out of the 2024 presidential race – making it difficult to reach him at first. “I was there for about 20 minutes and suddenly one of the friends showed me his phone and said, 'I think you need to check this out,'” Emhoff later recalled.

9. He has three tattoos.

Okay, cool dad! Emhoff has his two children's initials tattooed on his wrist, along with a dragon symbol tattoo to commemorate his and Harris' shared birth year of 1964 (the year of the dragon in the Chinese zodiac).

10. He has a pretty impressive celebrity lookalike.

None other than Andy Samberg himself, an authority on human comedy, portrayed Emhoff in the 50th season of Emhoff Saturday Night Livereferring to the potential First Gentleman as “Trad Huz” and “little spoon”. Watch a laugh-out-loud funny clip for yourself below.
