MD State Police are investigating the death of an ECI inmate as a possible homicide

Maryland State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at the Eastern Correctional Institute in Westover as a possible homicide.

Here's what we know now.

The inmate is identified as Virgil Bernard Robinson, 38. He was pronounced dead at the scene at ECI.

A person of interest, also an inmate, has been identified and charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and autopsy results.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was called to the scene of the September death

On September 21, 2024, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators from the Internal Investigations Unit of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services in connection with the death of an inmate. Investigators told state police that Robinson was found unresponsive in his cell at 5:10 p.m.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. Assistance was provided by crime scene technicians and investigators from the State Police DPSCS Internal Investigative Unit. Once the investigation is complete, the charges will be presented to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office for consideration.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
