Investigation into Walmart employee's oven death, questions raised

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (FOX Carolina) – After a Walmart employee's body was found in a walk-in industrial oven, people online are raising questions about how the tragic death occurred.

On October 19, 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur was found dead in the oven of the Walmart store in Canada where she worked.

Kaur and her mother worked together at the store on Mumford Road. A GoFundMe organized by the Maritime Sikh Society for Kaur's family, which has raised nearly $200,000, said her mother became worried after not seeing the teenager for an hour and left her in the walk-in oven ” “found burnt”.

The Walmart store has been closed since Kaur's death.

According to CBC Canada, Nova Scotia's Ministry of Labor, Skills and Immigration issued an order to stop work at the bakery, but later rescinded it. The agency said bakery operations could safely resume if Walmart decides to reopen.

TikTok videos of Walmart employees demonstrating safety measures at their stores' walk-in ovens have gone viral, raising questions about how the tragedy occurred. ChrisBreezie559 posted a video about the oven at her workplace that has been viewed more than 28 million times. It is shown that it can be turned on from the outside and has a door that is difficult to close.

Another TikTok video with more than 2 million views shows a Walmart employee explaining in her store that the door only locks when forcibly closed and that the oven door has an inside handle.

Halifax Regional Police have not released any new information since the initial report of Kaur's sudden death and said the investigation “could take a significant amount of time.”

Police urged people not to share speculation about the tragedy on social media.

The Hindustan Times reports that Kaur and her mother are originally from Ludhiana in the Indian state of Punjab. They reportedly moved from the United Kingdom to Canada in 2021 and have been working at Walmart for two years.

Kaur's father and brother remain in India.
