Normangee teacher resigns after being accused of “inappropriate conversations” with students

NORMANGEE, Texas (KBTX) – A Normangee ISD teacher resigned this week after he was accused of having inappropriate conversations with students.

The district told KBTX administrators that they heard from a student that the teacher was talking about his mistakes in life and other inappropriate extracurricular content.

When confronted by administration, the Normangee ISD superintendent said the teacher immediately resigned.

The principal of Normangee High School sent an email on Tuesday, Oct. 29, to parents with children enrolled in the six classes that school administrators said were subjected to the former teacher's misconduct.

The school said the teacher taught science classes for grades 8 to 12 and the vacancy to fill his position had been advertised. The school insists there is no place for this type of behavior in its school district.

However, according to the Normangee ISD superintendent, the school's legal counsel is still working on what happens next to the teacher following his resignation. That could include a referral to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), which maintains a “do not hire” registry for teachers accused of inappropriate behavior.

Often, teachers who resign before a district investigation avoid being placed on the registry. This means that other districts will have no record of this incident when hiring new employees.

The district said it will decide in the next few days what action to take against the resigned teacher and whether or not to refer him to the registry.

This accusation comes just two weeks after Normangee ISD fired another teacher who was accused of inappropriate behavior toward students. His case was referred to the police and the TEA for a possible permanent ban from working in education.
