Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi is charged with hate crimes after he allegedly shot and killed a Jewish man in Chicago

The illegal immigrant who allegedly opened fire on a Jewish man walking to Chicago synagogue last weekend was charged again with hate crimes and terrorism on Thursday, authorities said.

Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, 22, was hit with the additional charges after he allegedly shot and wounded a 39-year-old Jewish man in the city's West Ridge neighborhood Saturday morning – and then was involved in a shootout with authorities that led to his led to arrest.

“This shooting is deeply personal for members of our Jewish community, we know that,” Windy City Police Commissioner Larry Snelling said during a news conference broadcast locally. “But this shooting should be personal to everyone across the city.”

The suspect is said to have targeted a Jewish man because of his faith.

Shortly before there was an exchange of fire with the police, the suspected shooter is said to have shouted “Allahu Akbar”. He was critically injured in the shooting, in which paramedics were also caught in the crossfire. Abdallahi remained hospitalized Thursday.

Fortunately, the victim did not suffer life-threatening injuries and the first responders were not injured.

Abdallahi was initially charged with attempted murder, attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated assault and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The lack of hate crime charges early in the trial angered members of the Jewish community. But Snelling said investigators needed time to substantiate the hate crime and terrorism charges.

“There must be sufficient evidence to support allegations of hate crimes and terrorism and it was important that we took the time to conduct thorough investigations and confirm that this was indeed a crime of this nature,” he said. “We did not secure this indictment because of public pressure or media attention.”

Investigators searched the suspect's phone, which showed he planned to target members of the Jewish community in the lead-up to the shooting, Snelling added.

Terrorism charges are rarely filed, noted Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx.

“We underline the seriousness of targeting specific communities with violence intended to intimidate or terrorize,” she said. “This indictment sends a clear message.”

Mayor Brandon Johnson, who was criticized earlier this week for not acknowledging in an initial statement that the victim was Jewish, called the hatred directed at the Jewish community “vile.”

“There is absolutely no place for anti-Semitism in Chicago,” Johnson said during the press conference. “There is no place for hatred toward the Jewish community in our city.”

Abdallahi, who is from the West African country of Mauritania, entered San Diego in March 2023 and was screened by border officials before his release into the country, officials previously told The Post.

When the migrant was apprehended at the border last year, authorities found no criminal or terrorist history associated with him, sources said.

Abdallahi was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, but that has been delayed because he remains hospitalized, Foxx said.
