Fatal crash on I-83: ​​Violent multi-vehicle crash under investigation

Two people are dead and four others are injured after a fiery multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 83 in Baltimore County near the Pennsylvania border, Maryland State Police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a pickup truck pulling a trailer and traveling southbound lost control, entered the northbound lanes of the highway and struck a mobile crane, state police said.

Both vehicles “burst into flames” and the initial collision resulted in three additional vehicles colliding. The drivers of the pickup truck and mobile crane were pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident occurred near Exit 33 on I-83 North, which is north of Parkton and about five miles south of the Pennsylvania state line.

Police did not say whether the additional vehicles collided in the southbound or northbound lanes of the highway. Authorities did not publicly release the victims' names, citing the need to notify next of kin.

The four other injured people were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital in York, Pennsylvania. A spokesman for the Maryland State Police said in an email that they do not provide medical services.

According to the Maryland Department of Transportation, state troopers were initially on scene shortly after 2 p.m., and as of 7:10 p.m. the northbound lanes of I-83 remained closed at Exit 33. State police said lanes were closed due to the crash investigation.
